Overlordship of Daws Castle

in the parish of Watchet

in the county of Somerset

This title is currently held along with the land that the remains of the castle stand on

The Overlordship of Daws Castle is entitled to bestow titles of dignity in the tradition of the Ancient Kingdom of Wessex

Can an Overlord grant the issuance of titles of dignity?

  • Yes. In ancient and medieval feudal systems, "overlords" (like kings, emperors, or major magnates) held ultimate land ownership and possessed the legal authority to create or issue titles of dignity (like peerages or fiefdoms) to their vassals.

Historically and legally, the issuance of titles of dignity involves specific nuances:

    • Subinfeudation: In ancient and medieval feudalism, major overlords (tenants-in-chief) could grant portions of their land to lesser lords. Along with the land, they could grant titles or administrative privileges.
    • Monarchical Monopoly: In many jurisdictions (such as in the UK), the authority to create peerages was eventually restricted to the Sovereign (the monarch or crown). The King or Queen was considered the ultimate overlord, and they could issue letters patent to formally grant dignities being those that were peerage dignities.

The titles which the overlordship of Daws Castle can issue are not peerage titles. They are titles of dignity that are incorporeal (without land) such as Knight of Daws Castle KtDC, Member of the Order of Daws Castle MDC, Ealdorman of Daws Castle (Earl), Thegn (Thane) Lord of Daws Castle, Chief Prince of Daws Castle (this is not a title of Royalty. It is equivalent to Duke).

These are not possessory titles but genuine titles in their own right.
